I'm Canadian but I've been to all four.

I landed in Bangkok, Thailand, no visa, and bused it to Laos, then to Cambodia, then to Vietnam.

You can buy Visa's at the Laos boarder from Thailand, other entrances you have to check. You can buy a Cambodian visa at the Laos/Cambodia border, others change, again check when you have a definite plan. You can buy a visa at the Hanoi airport, otherwise you have to apply in advance. I got mine at the Vietnam embassy in Phenom Penh, took a day or two. Places everywhere will do it for you, and some of them are even legitamate.

Good luck.

If you go by bus, a visa is not required on the border of Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia. However, if you go by air, you do need a visa.

If you want to return these countries several times within a month or more and do not want to get visas again, you can apply a visa-on-arrival 1 month/3 month multiple (up to your time there). Though the cost is a bit higher than usual, it saves your time and effort.

In my opinion, traveling by bus is not a good idea as it is tiring (you know the streets are rough) and takes much of your time.

Good luck to your trip!

As far as i know, you are correct, visa on arrival for Cambodia (at least that was the case in 2002). Thailand, no problem. Vietnam however, does require a visa ahead of time to enter. Or at least it did for me (also US pp holder). I applied online for the vietnamese visa and had it expedited which took 48 hours. They sent me the visa via email and I presented it upon arrival. You would need a credit card to pay for it over the internet.

I only got a single entry on my Cambodia visa. You can just get another one to re-enter no problem, just like a visa run.

As for Laos, unfortunately I have not been (yet). Although I believe you will need one for there as well.

Bus would be the way to go, trains when they are available (always enjoy sitting in the open doors watching the country pass by).

Cheers

Well, i do not know clearly about Laos, Thailand and Cambodia visa, but about Vietnam visa, for sure a US passport holder like you need Vietnam visa to enter the country. If you enter the country by airway from UAS, Laos, or Thailand, you should apply online for Vietnam visa on arrival to get official visa at Vietnam airport. Procedure to apply online for Vietnam visa on arrival is very easy because you have assistance from a Vietnam visa agent like http://vietnamvisa-online.com/

Mixed up people

Visa for Cambodia can be obtained at the border.

Visa for Lao can be obtained at the border.

Visa for Thailand can be obtained at the border.

Visa for Vietnam must be obtained in advance.

You can do this through any Viet embassy or you can do it on line

Try these guys. I have used them for my last 4 visas

http://www.visa-vietnam.org/vietnam-visa-online.html

they can work it so you can pick your visa up at the airport. Not sure about bus crossings but they can fill you in. Very good service and no problems at all. I picked up 2 at the airport and 2 in country.

If you are getting a Visa in Phonm Phen try Luckys. Its a motor bike shop but they do hundreds of Viet visas and can high speed one for you. You have to specify if you want multiple entry Visas. They cost a little more but are generally worth it.
