If you go by bus, a visa is not required on the border of Vietnam-Laos-Cambodia. However, if you go by air, you do need a visa. If you want to return these countries several times within a month or more and do not want to get visas again, you can apply a visa-on-arrival 1 month/3 month multiple (up to your time there). Though the cost is a bit higher than usual, it saves your time and effort. In my opinion, traveling by bus is not a good idea as it is tiring (you know the streets are rough) and takes much of your time. Good luck to your trip!

Vietnam embassy in Cambodia is the best place to pick up a Vietnamese visa if you travel Vietnam via land board– saying by Lonely Planet guidebook. The charges are around $30 and it is available on the same day. Bangkok is also a popular place as you can get cheap packages with the ticket and visa combined. If you are planning to spend more than a month in Vietnam, or want to move out of it and enter Laos or Cambodia then come back Vietnam again, you can get multiple entry visa that is valid for 3 months or 6 months. Personal appearance is often a determinant of the welcome that you receive from the airport immigration. You can expect trouble if you wear shorts or ruffled clothes or look unshaven or dirty.

To apply for a Vietnam visa, please follow the simple steps as below:

- Fill in your online application form at our website http://www.vietnamimmigration.com/apply-vietnam-visa/

- Make payment for us as per instructions.

- Obtain your visa approval letter via our email.

If you still can’t receive any approval letter within the required time, please let us know immediately via our email info@vietnamimmigration.com

Most visas you can get at the border or upon entry to the country. I don't think you can get the vietnam visa at the border but you can organise before you leave with the vietnamese embassy or with the vietnamese embassy in bangkok, many of the guesthouses in thailand/cambodia will be able either to organise for you or advise how to get it.

You get the thai visa upon entry to the country, the cambodian one can be got at the border - the visa is $20, but you can expect to pay about $25 its easier just to pay this or you can be left waiting for ages - one tip if you are going overland from thailand into cambodia at the Poipet (camobida) border - the road to siem reap is terrible - unpaved all the way, the bus can take up to 10 hours and a car up to 4 - to hire a car to siem reap will cost max $40, this was the option we chose. The visa for Laos can be got at the border and i think is about $30.

This was how I organised my visas - however i didnt go the same route and then not the same border crossings.

You go online at https://www.e-visavietnam.com, fill in the secure form, and just wait until 1-2 days until you receive your Visa Approval Letter, and take this + your passport + 2 photos to Vietnam to get your visa at airport.

Getting visas to the countries you mention is not difficult.

For Cambodia, you can get a tourist visa application approved on-line (USD 25.-).

For visas to Laos and Vietnam (roughly USD 30 each), I suggest that you get them in Bangkok. Although you can get visas at consulates as you travel, it is a great comfort to have one's travel documents in order before embarking on the trip.
